Food
Project--Phase III
This phase shows how
we ended the food project and what events took place.
During our
daily meetings with the students, they decided that going to a farm and
having a picnic was the best way to end the food unit. So we went
to Carol's Country Place in Fresno, TX. The students also wanted
to sing farm songs and write and draw in their journals everything they
saw and did at the farm. This was a great ending to our food project
because the students had a vast knowledge of where food comes from, what
category it is in and if it is good for you.
We
learned that milk can also come from a goat, not just a cow.
These boys just became aware that goats only have teeth
on the bottom of their mouth and this led to a discussion of how the goats
eat and how come their clothes didn't get any holes in them while the goats
were chewing on them.
The students remembered that many meat products come from
pigs such as bacon, sausage and ham.
After
walking through Miss Carol's garden we discussed how squash, green beans,
tomatoes, spinach, lettuce and herbs grow and that they look different
from how we buy them at the grocery store.
Here
are some of the drawings that were done after the field trip to the farm.
The children
wrote, " I liked the tractor, the farmer must use this for the garden."
"I liked the
fat pigs and the garden, we get alot of our food from a farm."
"I liked it
when I played basketball on the farm."
"I like the
horse, pigs, goats, lamb and cow."
When we
look back over the course of the project we see how active the children
were in their own learning! We were excited and amazed how
the children took charge of this project and learned more than we thought
possible. It was a great experience for the teachers and the students!
